Namaste, friends and Happy Spring! 🙂
On my journey to wellness, I encountered a book that was given to me a long time ago by a good friend of mine who incidentally happens to be my older cousin. The book is called Claim The Victory: An Introduction to Wholistic Living and was written by Keefa K. Lorraine, N.D., U.B.D. who identifies as an ‘Urban Bush Doctor’.
This book is so insightful and has helped me along my journey. It teaches about how to properly care for your body and listen to it’s needs, as well as live as natural a life as possible. In reading, I came across a chapter entitled “Seasons of Change” which outlined tips for eating and living well according to the seasons.
Spring is time of renewal and regeneration. The vibrancy and energy this season brings is evident in the lush greenery and fresh blooms as nature balances and heals itself. Spring is also a time of healing for you too, flower child. This type of healing takes place through the body’s digestive system (which is responsible for assimilating food and ridding the body of waste) and occurs mainly in the liver.
The key to making the best of the bubbling energy of Spring is to eat yellow foods! Yellow foods such as bananas, ackee and apples contain lots of good stuff like beta-carotene, vitamin C and potassium which stimulate the liver, aid digestive processes, assist in detoxification and encourage a healthy alkaline balance in the body. We can also consume yellow foods in therapeutic raw juices.
My favourite raw juice combinations you can try: Carrot + beet + cucumber / Carrot + beet + coconut water/ Pineapple + ginger
These brightly-coloured foods are not only good for our bodies but they’re also good for our minds! For those of us who like to embrace our inner yogi, yellow is associated with the solar plexus chakra (which is located right below the rib cage and above the navel). Eating yellow foods promotes positive and uplifting feelings and can help fight depression and fatigue, giving an overall feeling of wellness.
Healing herbs for spring include: sage, dandelion, garlic, ginko biloba.
Essential oils for spring: oils of lavender, clary sage, rose, cedarwood and Ylang Ylang.
So, this Spring, be sure to incorporate some yellow, liver-friendly foods in your diet to keep you bright and energized! Be well.
